No question that the 'sound' that AR delivers today is on a par with the very first, high quality AR products. Founded in 1952 by audio pioneer, writer, inventor researcher and audio-electronics teacher Edgar Villchur and his student Henry Kloss, the company soon grew into a major force in the sound industry. In 1956, the company was granted its first patent for the air suspension woofer that solved the problem that affected all loudspeakers at that time....bass distortion. That development led the way to a host of other scientific and engineering breakthroughs that highlight the brand even today.

By the late '50's AR had set the acoustic world on fire again with the introduction of the first speakers to include "dome" high frequency tweeters; the first long throw woofer that produces more bass by pushing more air...a standard in the industry today. So confident were we in our quality that in 1956 AR introduced the first 5-Year Warranty that is the standard today.

For more than 10 years after those introductions, the AR speaker line dominated the industry thanks to their life-like reproduction of sound. Other technological breakthroughs highlighted the 70's and 80's, like the first high current amplifier, the first belt drive turntable and the first multi-driver vertical loudspeaker another standard configuration that still holds today. In September of 1993, as testimony to the breakthroughs of speaker technology, and AR 3 speaker was placed on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.

The Acoustic Research brand continued to make technology breakthroughs in the speaker industry with a variety of industry firsts that included the first environmental controls that allowed a speaker to be placed in different room areas, the Acoustic Blanket that minimized diffraction and interference in speaker baffles and the first speaker line designed to compliment home theater and the digital technologies of the 90's.

Wireless Speakers

Wireless speakers have been around for a long time, however their performance has left a bit to be desired ...until now. The new Acoustic Research wireless home theatre conversion kits provide reliable high quality audio in the presence of many other types of emissions such as WiFi, Bluetooth and Zigbee products, cordless telephones, microwave ovens, and other common household and retail store interferers.

High quality, robust, transmission requires a large degree of message redundancy. Error correction, retransmission, and data buffering causes delay (latency), which means that transmission has to occur at very high bit rates to minimize delay. The new AR speaker system transmits four audio channels at 11 Mb/S (11 million bits per second). The system uses a "sniff before transmit" algorithm to sense and avoid interferers, since the system is also frequency agile.

Normally, only stereo systems that have a single receiver tethered to two speakers can have the requisite QOS channel, but the tethered speakers severely restrict the placement of the speakers, defeating the purpose of wireless. The very high speed transmission of the new AR systems makes it possible to meet the conflicting demands of audio quality, interference immunity and low latency, seamlessly to the user.

No other wireless home theatre communication platform comes close to meeting the complete suite of home theatre performance requirements. And they are easy to use and set-up....and they give the consumer complete flexibility to place his speakers wherever he wishes and to configure his set-up without wiring limitations.

On to the future....

The AR brand commitment to quality an innovation will not stop with the development the first wireless to deliver true uncompressed CD quality sound that is impervious to interference from microwave ovens and other household appliances, AR also just launched the first in a line of intuitive, high quality and superior design home audio electronics to compliment the company's already renowned reputation for inventing quality sound...
